Performing:  The Guardians

Finn Peters – Saxophone

Victor De Boo – Drums

Jacko Schoonderwoerd – Bass

Leo Bauwmeester – Piano

For almost half a century, every Sunday afternoon, we’ve been running a jam session at Café de Engelbewaarder at the Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam. Until his untimely demise in September 2012, Sean Bergin was our indisputable front man. Although dearly missed, we have been able to fill the void with an endless slew of more than excellent saxophone players.

It must have been about half a year ago that Finn sat in. All three of us recognized something we hadn’t heard in a long time. Not the notes, not the tunes, but for a moment it seemed as if Sean stuck his head around the doorway and nodded, it’s OK.- Finn

In 1979 Sean and Ernst stayed at our place in Devon (The Old Rectory, Pyworthy). I must have been 5 years old. My Dad, Tony Langham, produced a duo album they made called “Mistakes.” So I grew up listening to Sean’s music. Apparently Sean had just learned Coltrane’s solo on Giant Steps and was playing that quite a lot!

One summer in the 90s I spent some time staying at Sean’s flat near the Dappermarkt, close to where I now live. Sean was great and he showed me how to circular breathe on the flute and we practiced together sometimes. I still have the manuscript of a Dudu Pukwana tune, “Bird Lives”, which Sean gave me back then. Sean was super kind and generous to me – I was just a kid hanging out in Amsterdam. I went to see him play at the Bimhuis with Louis Moholo. – CD

On the way back from the studio, Victor noticed it would have been Sean’s birthday. We recorded a CD. You’re looking at it. And, if you’re lucky, you’re listening to it too. – J.S.

Jazz music of the 60’s. Names such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Joe Henderson. This time period is for Nitin Parree (1996) one of the most interesting and revolutionary in jazz history. Here all the earlier jazz styles came together and formed what is known as post- bop: hard-bop with free-jazz elements and a lot of individualism.
This period of time is where Nitin Parree takes his inspiration from and that got him into jazz music in the first place. Striving for the balance between swing and free-jazz elements is what is most interesting to him.
